Open Haus cocktail recipe

Haus aperitif

The first time I tried Haus was actually from my coworker at my full-time job (Neighbor, if you’re not aware). She had gotten each of us a little thrifted cocktail glass with the sampler bottle of Haus and a handwritten cocktail recipe as a Holiday/New Years gift.

The delivery was so special and cute that I never wanted to open it—but I was really drawn to the beautiful packaging of the Haus bottle.

I had never heard of Haus and I wasn’t even sure what it was—the liquid inside was a light-amber color, almost like honey. When I got home, I unpacked the box and read through the recipe. It sounded simple enough and I made it in the thrifted cocktail glass I’d received.

The first sip was delicious!

It was really light—not sweet, but didn’t taste much like alcohol. It had a very floral aroma to it, like I was drinking a flower.

The flavor was great, but as a designer, I had to admire the packaging too! The bottle was adorable, and for those of you who know me, I love small, miniaturized things (and if you’re wondering, yes, I kept the bottle and currently have it sitting on my countertop in my kitchen). The cork stop was even cute on it. And the sticker logo on the glass bottle looked so crisp and classy. I was obsessed!

Choosing my branding name

Brand naming and brainstorming

When I finally decided to work on a rebrand for my business, I knew I wanted to go in the direction of an open studio environment—similar to what I experienced during design school. I loved the feeling of a group of creative people in a room together, being able to work together and just lean over to ask what someone next to you thought of your work and get immediate feedback. I loved the closeness of that atmosphere and how we were all in it together and how much creativity it fostered because we were all working together. I knew that was the feeling I wanted for my design studio. I wanted that collaborative environment where it felt like we were all working together on a team to make something beautiful. I went through so many names, trying to find the right one.

And after a long time going through names and crossing things off my list, I ended up on Open House. It felt conducive of community and had the feeling of relating to an open studio environment where people can come and go as they please, but with the casual feeling of being invited to someone’s house party where you can come in, make friends, maybe have a cookie or two, and just be somewhere else for a while.

One big concern with Open House though was that it might give people the idea that I’m actually related to the housing industry. But then a lightbulb went off. The Bauhaus era was a graphic design period of time where primary shapes, colors and experimental layouts were being explored. It felt like a true representation of what I was looking for in my business—that carefree experimentation and exploration, with the open community environment rooted in school. It was also very related to the type of design I learned while in school.

When I settled on the name and officially decided to move forward with it, I was talking with my boyfriend in the kitchen about how happy I was with that decision. I looked over and there on the counter was the little bottle of Haus apéritif. 🥲

Now I’m here to share this cute little cocktail recipe with you!
